Kedah House - Malaysian AYCE

Kedah House Restaurant and Cafe

1652 SE Marine Dr, Vancouver

Kedah House Restaurant and Cafe on Urbanspoon

Food: 3.5
Service: 3
Price: Fair ($9.95 for AYCE)

I probably would have never found this place if it wasn't recommended to me. A couple weeks ago, A. extended an invite to R and I to join him to try the AYCE (all you can eat) at Kedah House which is only available on weekends.
Kedah house is located on Marine Way in a small strip mall next to Visions Electronics. R and I nearly missed it if it wasn't for its bright fuscia colored sign.
Their AYCE was very simple, it consisted of a salad bar with peanut sauce, rice, noodle, chicken, beef, and sambal egg.
Oh yeah, there was also a pot of soup. It was slightly sour and a bit spicy. This reminded me of Tom Yang soup with less complicated flavors (less spice, such as basil leaf).

Although the selection was simple, but most of the food was very well done. The beef rendang was excellent. The lemon grass flavor was very evident and the beef really well braised and flavorful. The chicken was not bad, as it was flavorful, but just a bit dry. Both the rice and noodle were okay. Typically I hate peanut sauce, but for some reason the ones here was really tasty. The peanut was coarsely chopped, and there was also a hint of sweetness in the sauce.
Also, I forgot to mention, they also had dessert: a coconut jello or sweet black sticky rice soup. The coconut jello was pretty good, as it tasted like real coconut milk and water. I really like the black sticky rice soup, as it was not overly sweet and cooked to the perfect state of being glutinous without being too sticky. This soup was served hot, personally I wish they would serve this cold.

Kedah house is definitely what you would consider a hole in the wall, but they do serve good food. Also for the price of $9.95, it really is quite a bargain considering only one dish at any Malaysian restaurant will probably cost the same. Overall, I definitely recommend Kedah house to anyone who loves Malaysian food, as it's pretty authentic (says our friends) and good.

We also like eating at Kedah house even though the buffet choices are pretty simple. It's a pretty good deal considering how much it would be if you were to order each dish individually...and since we enjoy a variety..this just works for us :)

@ Kevin: I didn't know that, next time I guess

@ 604munchies: I know, I think the beef rendang itself would cost as much as the buffet.
