Recently a friend shared a picture of a bowl of curry ramen, and I was immediately intrigued. You see, if anyone ask me what's R's favorite food is, I would definitely go with Curry. So it was no surprised that R wanted to try it. After asking the friend, I found out that it was Benkei who was serving this new soup base.

Benkei is seriously popping up everywhere. I mean there are 2 just on Broadway, not to mention the original 2 in downtown. For this visited, I decided to check out one on Broadway near Fairview area.
Since my all time favorite Ramen from Benkei was the Akoani ($7.80), I had to get it again. However, as soon as I received it I noticed a difference. This bowl of ramen had black oily bits floating on top (see old version in post here). After tasting the soup, I came to the conclusion it's grounded black pepper. Both R and I think the soup base now taste like Sichuan Mapo Tofu. I mean it's not necessarily a bad thing, but I want the old version back, because it was more original.
This would be the Curry Ramen ($7.80?) that R came for. Both of us like the curry soup, it wasn't very thick, but quite flavorful with a medium curry taste. The noodle was al dente as always. The vegetables were a bit weak, as the carrot was really soft, but had no flavor. The same can be said about the chicken, but maybe it was intended this way so it won't conflict with the curry base.

Other than the curry ramen mentioned above, they also had this new curry beef on rice combo. I am not entirely sure, but this new curry ramen/rice might be branch specific, because I don't see it mentioned anywhere else. Anyways, if you like curry, I would recommend you to check it out.

ps: anyone knows any other place that serves curry ramen or have any curry recommendations?

Maybe its the purist in me but Curry Ramen sounds really strange but intriguing. From my knowledge, I believe the Curry Rice is available at Benkei Robson as well...not too sure about the Curry Ramen however.

Is the Akaoni soup base actually as good as I've heard? I remember Elaine from O-my-sweet-tooth really advocating me to try it. I'm typically not a Benkei fan but I may head there next time to give it a try.
